Face Value 13 Cents | 1977 | Scott 1722
Issued in 1977 as part of the United States Bicentennial celebration, these stamps feature the Battle of Oriskany (by Frederick Yohn) and the American militia led by General Nicholas Herkimer. One of the bloodiest battles in the Revolutionary War, this war did not involve British troops, but instead saw Americans loyal to the British Crown and allied Native Americans ambushing a military party en route to Fort Stanwix (New York). Herkimer suffered a leg wound during the early stages of the battle, but continued to give orders from the sidelines; after the battle an attempt to amputate his leg resulted in complications that led to his death 10 days later.
Interested in more history or Bicentennial stamps to pair with these for postage? Check out our other stamp listings. All our vintage stamps can still be used to pay postage on current mail (using additional postage as needed to make up the current first-class rate). All are unused with full gum on reverse; however, due to the age of the stamps, we recommend use of a damp sponge instead of licking the back, or we might recommend using a dab of a permanent glue stick before mailing.
