Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Emily Bissel founded that city’s first kindergarten and campaigned for child labor laws. Drawn to the cause of helping people with tuberculosis, in 1907 she introduced the first Christmas seal. Sales of the seal that year raised $3000 for the National Tuberculosis Association, and by 1916, jointly supported by the American Red Cross, sales of seals were raising over $1 million per year. Show your support of this worthy cause by using these stamps on your mail.
Interested in more social causes or medicine/health stamps to pair with these for postage? We might suggest pairing these with stamps commemorating nursing or hospitals, or other health/medicine stamps. Check out our other vintage stamp listings, all of which can still be used to pay postage on current mail (using additional postage as needed to make up the current first-class rate). All are unused with full gum on reverse; however, due to the age of the stamps, we recommend use of a damp sponge instead of licking the back, or we might recommend using a dab of a permanent glue stick before mailing.
